Frequently Asked Questions

A forehead osteoma is a benign (non-cancerous) bony tumor that grows on the skull. It feels like a hard, immobile "stone" under the skin. While harmless, most patients remove them because they are cosmetically bothersome.

No. Because an osteoma is made of mature, compact bone, it will not dissolve or disappear naturally. The only way to remove it is through a specialized surgical procedure.

An osteoma is stony-hard and fixed to the bone. A lipoma is soft, rubbery, and moves under the skin. A cyst is usually firm but doughy and may be attached to the skin. Dr. Vaibhav Shah uses clinical examination (and sometimes a CT scan) to confirm the diagnosis.

Not with our technique. Unlike traditional surgery that cuts directly over the bump, we use an endoscopic approach. We place a small incision behind or at the side of the hairline, leaving your forehead skin completely untouched and scar-free.

Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a dental procedure. We use local anesthesia to completely numb the area. With our Piezoelectric "cold-cut" technology, there is no heat damage to the bone, which significantly reduces post-operative pain.

Traditional drills use rotating burs that generate heat and can accidentally nick soft tissue. The Piezoelectric device uses ultrasonic vibrations that only cut bone. It is "tissue-selective," meaning it cannot damage nerves or skin, ensuring maximum safety.

Yes, the Supraorbital and Supratrochlear nerves are very close to where osteomas grow. This is why specialized skill is required. Dr. Shah endoscopic method allows for clear visualization to safely move these nerves aside during bone contouring.

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Most cases are easily performed under Local Anesthesia with sedation, meaning you are relaxed but awake. However, for very large osteomas or patient preference, General Anesthesia is an option.

Most patients return to work within 2 to 3 days. You may experience mild swelling, but because our Piezoelectric method is so gentle, there is typically very little bruising.

Recurrence is extremely rare (less than 1%). Dr. Shah experience with 3,000+ cases ensures that the base of the osteoma is completely contoured flush with the skull, preventing regrowth.

While not always mandatory for small bumps, a CT scan is the "gold standard" for planning. It helps us see the exact thickness of your skull and the base of the osteoma for a safer surgery.

Yes. We do need to shave some hair. The small incision is made carefully between the hair follicles.

Yes, when performed by a Board-Certified Maxillofacial Surgeon. The Piezoelectric tool is much safer than a traditional drill because its depth can be controlled with extreme precision, protecting the inner "table" of the skull.

You can usually wash your face the next day and gently wash your hair after 7 to 8 days, following specific post-op instructions.

In most cases, they occur spontaneously. However, if you have multiple osteomas, it may be linked to certain genetic conditions like Gardner Syndrome. Dr. Shah can evaluate this during your consultation.

If you only have local anesthesia, you may be able to drive. However, if sedation is used, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home.

No. The goal of the surgery is to restore the natural, smooth curvature of your forehead. We use the Piezoelectric device to "sculpt" the bone so it blends perfectly with the surrounding skull.

The most common issues are mild swelling and a slight "tightness" at the hairline incision. These usually resolve within a week.

Maxillofacial surgeons are the only specialists specifically trained in the complex bony architecture of the face and skull. With over 3,000 successful removals, Dr. Vaibhav Shah offers a level of refined expertise that ensures both medical safety and an elite aesthetic result.

Post-Operative Recovery Guide

Patient Care Instructions by Dr. Vaibhav Shah

Congratulations on a successful procedure. Because we utilized the Mectron Piezoelectric Flex and Endoscopic techniques, your recovery will be significantly smoother than traditional bone surgery. Please follow these guidelines to ensure the best aesthetic and clinical result.

Immediate Aftercare

Q: When can I leave the clinic?

A: Since this is an outpatient procedure, you can usually leave within 3-4 hours after surgery once the effects of the local anesthesia or sedation have worn off. We recommend having a companion drive you home.

Q: How should I position my head when resting?

A: For the first 48 to 72 hours, please sleep with your head elevated at a 30-degree angle (use 2“3 pillows). This is critical to minimize forehead swelling. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or flat on your back.

Pain & Medication

Q: Will I experience pain after the numbness wears off?

A: Due to the "cold-cut" ultrasonic technology of the Piezoelectric device, bone pain is minimal. You may feel a sensation of "tightness" or mild throbbing.

  • Action: Take the prescribed pain relievers exactly as directed by Dr. Shah. Do not wait for the pain to become severe before taking your dose.

Q: Should I finish the entire course of antibiotics?

A: Yes. Even if you feel perfectly fine, you must complete the full course of antibiotics to prevent any secondary infection of the surgical site.

Wound Care & Hygiene

Q: When can I wash my face and hair?

A:
Face: You may gently wipe your face with a damp cloth 24 hours after surgery. Avoid getting water directly on the hairline incision.
Hair: You may gently wash your hair with a mild baby shampoo after 48 hours. Do not scrub the incision site; let the soapy water run over it and pat dry gently with a clean towel.

Q: What do I do about the dressing/bandage?

A: If a pressure bandage was applied, keep it in place for the first 24 hours. If it becomes loose or soiled, please contact the clinic via WhatsApp before removing it.

Activity & Diet

Q: What can I eat after surgery?

A: You can resume your normal diet after 5 hours. However, we recommend high-protein meals and staying well-hydrated to aid the healing of the bone and soft tissue.

Q: Can I exercise or lift weights?

A: No. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or bending over (where your head is below your heart) for at least 7 days. Increased blood pressure in the face can cause unwanted swelling or bleeding at the incision site.

Managing Swelling & Bruising

Q: Is swelling normal?

A: Yes. Mild swelling around the forehead and sometimes near the upper eyelids is normal. It usually peaks on Day 2 or 3 and subsides rapidly thereafter.

  • Tip: Use a cold compress (ice pack wrapped in a cloth) on the forehead for 10 minutes every hour during the first 24 hours. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
